Sancti Spíritus: replenishment at ATMs suspended

The cash shortage continues to be a serious problem in Cuba that seems to have no end, so the branch of the Bank of Credit and Commerce (Bandec) in Sancti Spiritusdecided to suspend cash replenishment at ATMs in recent days.

This was explained by the director of that financial entity, Francisco Castro Díaz, during an interview he offered to a local radio station in that town on the island.

In that sense, it was specified that currently, only a maximum of 5,000 Cuban pesos is being delivered, in cash, to those customers who go to the cashier’s counters at the entity during banking hours, using the balance on the magnetic cards.

Likewise, he indicated that for account owners to be able to use cash under this mechanism, in addition to carrying their respective magnetic card, they must present the identity card in order to verify the ownership of the bank account.

According to the Castro official from Sancti Spíritus, with this measure they seek to “control the distribution of the little cash in existence so that it reaches more people.”

Likewise, Castro pointed out that apparently they have detected that the same person goes to the ATM with several cards and they have managed to withdraw up to 80 thousand pesos in cash. However, this could be a new excuse invented by the regime to try to cover up the serious lack of liquidity that exists on the island, caused by the failed communist model.

It is important to mention that the lack of cash is a situation that has been afflicting Cubans in Sancti Spíritus, and in the rest of the island for some time, and has become evident when seeing reports of the long lines that form at ATMs.
