Adela de Toledo, Country Manager of Pure Storage Iberia has spoken with Corresponsables about the bases of its ESG policies, the reduction of emissions through innovation, its goal of being net zero in 2040, and the role of the board of directors in the company’s CSR and Sustainability policies.

The technology and data storage solutions company integrates environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices in its strategy and operations. Pure Storage highlights its focus on the development and continuous improvement of products that are energy efficient and minimize electronic waste

Reducing emissions through innovation

Pure Storage has set ambitious goals to significantly reduce carbon emissions and optimize energy use through its innovative storage technology. The storage systemsor Pure Storage are designed to be extremely efficient, using up to 80% less energy and space than traditional solutionswhich not only reduces operating costs but also the environmental impact of data centers

Adela points out that “Pure Storage is a company truly committed to ESG criteria. Since 2009 we have been working with engineering that allows us to achieve a reduction in energy consumption. in a scenario where data growth is exponential and its storage plays a key role. “We were the great innovators in the introduction of flash technology, which allows us to reduce between two and five times the energy required for data centers to operate, and save between five and ten times more energy than any other system on the market.”

«Our idea is to replace 85% of all rotational discs obsolete devices that exist on the market for flash, in the next 5 years, to reduce data center energy use by 20%. Additionally, we want to minimize e-Waste (technological waste), and we have initiatives to reduce up to 20 tons per year. Thanks to our Pure as-a-Service initiative, we were the first company to launch storage as a service; It is based on SLAs and with this subscription we provide service to clients without having to make technology changes in the future, they will always be updated. In this way, we are able to reduce consumption, making a very important contribution to the market and the planet,” explains Adela de Toledo.

A notable aspect of Pure Storage commitment to sustainability is its focus on circularity and e-waste reduction. Through its Evergreen program, the company offers modular upgrades that extend the life of hardware and reduce the need for complete replacements, thereby reducing waste generation.

Net zero emissions by 2040

The multinational has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040, covering Scope 1 and 2 emissions and setting science-based targets for Scope 3. The eESG strategy of Pure Storage includes, as the Country Manager of the company in our country explains, the active participation of its employees:

Our efforts are led by the Global ESG Director, who is responsible for leading this transformation within our company, and reports directly to our Chief Legal Officer, who, in turn, reports directly to the CEO. He is absolutely critical, transversal and the entire company is fully informed. In 2022 we committed to having net zero emissions by 2040“In fiscal year 2023 we have committed to the SBTi (Science-Based Objectives) initiative for scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions,” says Adela de Toledo.
