Skyborn Sweden has submitted a permit application to the Swedish Government and the Land and Environment Court for the construction of the 3,000 MW Polargrund Offshore wind farm.

Located 35 kilometers offshore, south of Kalix and Haparanda, Polargrund Offshore is expected to generate up to 10TWh of fossil fuel-free electricity upon completion, enough energy to power more than 7% of Sweden’s current electricity consumption.

Construction of the park will be vital to meet the growing demand from Norrbotten’s rapidly expanding industries transitioning to cleaner operations. Some forecasts point to an unprecedented 800% increase in the region’s energy needs.

Niclas Broman, CEO of Skyborn Sweden, said: “Polargrund Offshore is a key project to realize the expansive development plans of the business sector in Norrbotten and enable Sweden’s progress towards net zero emissions.”

“As the developer of Sweden’s northernmost offshore wind farm, we are committed to overcoming the unique challenges posed by building such a large project in an Arctic environment,” he added.

Sweden’s total electricity needs are expected to at least double in the coming decades due largely to the electrification of heavy industries across the country. Access to clean, reliable electricity is essential for these industries to achieve their sustainability goals.

With Polargrund, Skyborn reinforces its commitment to a strong Swedish energy system. The company’s Swedish portfolio now encompasses four offshore wind farms with a combined potential annual production of approximately 40TWh.
