The fashion industry continues to adjust its workforce. In the fifth month of the year, the average number of affiliates in the textile, clothing and footwear sector stood at 129,966 people, 3.6% less than in the same month of 2023. As in previous months, footwear has been the subsector that has recorded the greatest collapseshrinking its workforce by 6.6%, to 39,278 Social Security affiliates.

In month-on-month terms, the three subsectors have recorded positive data. Specifically, the textile industry has gained weight by 0.6% compared to last month., while the tailoring has remained flat. Footwear, for its part, has seen its members gain the most compared to April, with an increase of 0.9%.

The majority of workers in the sector are employed in the General Regime, although the number of self-employed workers has managed to increase compared to the last month.. The first were 107,985 of the total, an increase of 0.5% compared to April, but a fall of 4% compared to May 2023.

The number of self-employed workers, for its part, stood at 21,981 people in the period, 0.4% above what was recorded in April. In year-on-year terms, the number of self-employed workers has fallen by 1.7%. The largest number of self-employed employees is in clothing, which accounts for 12,014 of the total. Textiles and footwear have 5,884 and 4,083 employees, respectively.

In the Spanish economy as a whole, The average membership figure in May has once again been above the barrier of 21 million peopleup to 21,321,794 people, which is up to 506,395 more workers than in May 2023. The hospitality industry has been the sector that has grown the most, followed by the segment of administrative activities and auxiliary services.
