Hy2gen Canada Inc, the Canadian subsidiary of the global green hydrogen producer Hy2gen, has been selected, following agreement with Hydro-Quebecto obtain a block of electricity for a green hydrogen and green ammonia production plant in Baie-Comeau.

Hydro-Québec will supply the Courant project’s electricity, which will be used to fuel the production of hydrogen and green ammonia. This is a critical milestone for the Courant project as it marks the point at which cutting-edge engineering can begin and the final investment decision (FID) is within reach.

If the final investment decision is positive, Hy2gen plans to begin construction of the green ammonia plant in the second half of 2026, with first green ammonia production planned for 2029, depending on Hydro-Québec’s connection schedule. For Hy2gen, this is another decisive step forward. Since 2023, Hy2gen has been producing green hydrogen at its plant in Werlte, Germany.

The constant supply of electricity from the hydroelectric grid to the Courant production facility will allow constant operation of the electrolysis process in which water is broken down into oxygen and hydrogen. Together with the nitrogen produced in situ, this green hydrogen will be converted into green ammonia. Courant’s location is attractive, with short transport routes to buyers, where green ammonia will be used to decarbonise chemical production, enabling the transition to a sustainable, emissions-neutral industry.

Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of Hy2gen, is delighted with this achievement: “We are honored by the Government of Quebec’s decision to award an energy block to our Courant project in Baie-Comeau. This recognition is a vote of confidence in our vision and our commitment to producing green hydrogen in Quebec. “This is a giant step for Hy2gen Canada and the renewable energy industry, which will allow us to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of the economy and the achievement of Quebec’s ambitious sustainable development goals.”

Pietro Di Zanno, Director of Hy2gen Canada Inc. adds: “We thank the Government of Quebec, Hydro-Québec and the people of Baie-Comeau for their help in the development of this emblematic project. “We look forward to working with everyone to move the project forward and reap the benefits for Quebec.”

Through its global subsidiaries, Hy2gen aims to become the largest and most reliable supplier of renewable hydrogen, a powerful accelerator of green transformation. The advancement of the Courant project represents another step on the path towards profitable, large-scale production of renewable energy solutions such as hydrogen and green ammonia, and towards market leadership with this concept.
