The Coruña artist Jano Muñozknown for its realistic style cityscapes As well as for his studied portraits that recall the great masters of the Baroque, he has completed what could be said to be his magnum opus. It is an oil painting large dimensions (two meters high by 2.7 meters long) in which A Coruña is captured with a level of detail that is astonishing for its thoroughness and precision. Upon seeing it, more than one will remember the famous views of Madrid that Antonio Lopez captured in the same realistic style, although Muñoz points out that the painter from La Mancha “uses another technique.”

“I really wanted to do this painting. I have painted many city landscapes, but never any of this magnitude. I think this is my big cityscape”explains Muñoz. Although there is a wide catalog of panoramic views of the city in the artist’s work, Muñoz had been looking for a “very generic” view with which to capture the essence of A Coruña, so he decided on the view offered by the building of Torres and Sáez, in Linares Rivas. “I was especially interested in reflecting the early morning light. “I wanted to do something real,” says the creator, who took a “brutal” economic risk when executing the work.

“It was two years of work, I started in 2022 and finished this year and, in the meantime, you have to continue paying the bills,” he points out. “The large paintings that he had done until now were already sold on sketches, but not this one,” says Muñoz. Fortunately, the artist is currently in talks with the City Council, which “shows a willingness to acquire it.” “I think that his place should be that, and many people have expressed the same to me, although first I would like him to be on display for a while,” declares the painter.

Muñoz applied different techniques to make the painting realistic, some of them counterintuitive. “Many of the things you see They are not actually painted. The brain senses that they are there and creates them. Above all, the background of the painting is made in this way, although the light is configured so as not to lose the structure of the unit,” he explains. “In the end, a lot of play is done with the paint so that when you see the painting you have the sensation that it is there and that it really is like that,” explains this master of realism.
