In addition, I provide some related information that I have considered of interest, especially if you plan to travel to Barcelona. For example, I tell you the types of parking areas available to drivers and the current price of the rates.
To pay the blue or green zone from your mobile, SMOU is your application

In addition to being able to pay the parking meter amount, with SMOU you also access other types of information. For example, you will be able to locate charging points for your electric car or manage municipal bicycle rental, known as Bicing. Best of all, SMOU is also available in other cities in the metropolitan area from Barcelona. So if you move around the area, and not just in the Catalan capital, it will be useful for you.

As you can see, it is a very complete tool (although it is not an app to teach you how to park) that facilitates mobility throughout the metropolitan area, not only in a private vehicle, but also in shared bicycle and motorbikes. Once you have downloaded the app, the first step is to register. This way, you can provide your payment information so that the application charges you directly for parking, without having to go to the parking meter.
When registering with SMOU you will have to enter a payment method and your vehicle information
When creating your account you will also have to indicate your vehicle information, because as you can imagine the application does not issue any tickets. Rather, associate the payment with the registration and, in this way, the conductor in the area can know if you paid the fee or not.
SMOU It works thanks to the geolocation of your mobile. This is not an unimportant detail, since the service does not allow you to initiate parking remotely. You must be in the same vehicle or in a very fenced area so that the application knows what rate you must pay depending on the area where you are. Allowing SMOU to locate you exactly also provides you with the correct information about the place where you plan to park, such as the correct time or price.
Once you have located the correct area, press on the map and then on Start parking
When you have everything ready, just press about the area of the map you are in and then tap on the button Start parking. The clock will start and your car will be correctly parked.
Regarding the timer, it is important to keep two things in mind. First, when you leave it is crucial to stop parking so that SMOU only charges you for the time the vehicle has remained in the parking space. And, second, don’t worry if you forget the time you started parking, because SMOU will notify you as the time runs out.

In Barcelona there are the following parking spaces:
- Unregulated places. There are not many that you will find, but there are still areas where you can park for free. This is common in the less populated neighborhoods of the city and those that are far from the center.
- Blue Zone. With regular hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., the blue zone of Barcelona allows parking for a maximum period of 2 hours. It has a price of up to 3.75 euros per hour, for cars without an environmental label.
- Green area. The green zone is usually found in residential areas and allows parking for a maximum period of 2 hours for non-residents and 7 days for residents. It has a price of up to 4.25 euros per hour, for cars without an environmental label. For residents, it has a symbolic price of 20 cents a day.
- DUM Areas (Urban Distribution of Goods). This is what the spaces reserved for loading and unloading goods are called. To register a vehicle in these areas, you need to use the SPRO app.
- Places for residents. You must be very careful with these places: they are only for residents. They are located in residential areas where places are scarce. An example is the Barceloneta neighborhood, where most of the squares inside are exclusive for residents, although with an established schedule.
Before parking the vehicle, it is best to take a look at the signage instructions. Generally, if it is a white or blue area, you will not have to worry about anything other than paying. If it is yellow or greencheck that you really meet the parking requirements.
On the other hand, do not forget that there are also exclusive areas for taxis and buses where it is prohibited to leave the vehicle parked. If you go to travel by motorcycle, don’t worry about anything we’ve mentioned here. These types of vehicles can park for free in designated areas and, under certain conditions, on the sidewalk.
