The initiative has been launched in the Leroy Merlin stores in Marbella and Majadahonda, with great success. After both days, a repair rate of 62% of the products has been achieved, while 33% required replacement parts that were indicated to customers so that they could purchase them, along with detailed instructions to complete the repair at home. In total, 37.2 kg of products were saved from ending up as waste, thus giving them a second life.

These workshops are part of Leroy Merlin’s commitment to a circular economy focused not only on reducing the company’s environmental footprint, but also on the creation of new collaborative economy services available to customers, to promote the culture of repair and ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY). After the good reception of these workshops, the objective is to carry out more ‘Repair Café’ sessions during the coming months.

An increasingly responsible consumer

Consumer interest in products related to the circular economy continues to grow, reflecting a significant change in purchasing habits and environmental awareness. According to a recent study (Oney, 2023), 66% of European consumers have purchased products and services related to the circular economy, and 90% of them have done so to adopt more environmentally responsible behaviors.

In Spain, this trend towards more responsible consumption is also on the rise. According to data from the latest Brands with Values study, 81% of Spanish citizens express concern about giving a second life to the products they own, whether by repairing them, selling them, lending them or giving them away.
Thus, the ‘Repair Café’ workshops join other Leroy Merlin initiatives that promote the circular economy such as “Almost Perfectos”, with which the company recovers returned products with minor aesthetic damage to be able to put them back on sale, the ‘WeCare’ repair and after-sales service, or the product and tool rental service, available on its website and stores. In addition, Leroy Merlin has launched a network of sustainability ambassadors among its employees so that it permeates all levels of the organization.
