The first Volvo to start a new era in safety

This week we’re looking forward to celebrating, as manufacturing of our new electric flagship SUV has begun at our factory outside Charleston, South Carolina, USA — with first customer deliveries scheduled for the second semester of this year.

The EX90 not only expands our range of fully electric vehicles, but also represents a paradigm shift for the company because it is the first Volvo car to be equipped with central computing technology – technology that enables a new era of safety for our vehicles.

The first custom-built EX90 to roll off the Charleston production line was a striking Denim Blue model that will soon be delivered to a US customer.

The first Volvo Cars factory in the United States opened in the summer of 2018 on the outskirts of Charleston, one of the oldest and most historic cities in the country. Today, the Charleston factory produces the EX90 and S60 sedan, and the facility has the capacity to produce up to 150,000 vehicles per year.

In recent years we have made significant investments at this site. The body shop and paint shop have been renovated and expanded considerably, and the factory now also features a state-of-the-art battery production line.

With these investments, our US factory is well prepared for this new era in its still short history and reflects our long-term commitment to South Carolina and the United States, where Volvo Cars has operated for almost 70 years across a strong network of 281 dealerships spread across 47 states.

The EX90 is based on our next-generation EV technology foundation, with an all-electric range of up to 600 km. The EX90 is designed to be the safest Volvo car yet, equipped with next-generation active and passive safety technology and software that receives information from a wide range of sensors.

Rooted in our Scandinavian design principles, the EX90 offers modern proportions that optimize safety, efficiency and aesthetics. Thanks to its authentic seven-seater configuration, it is the ideal companion for the entire family, with a high dose of space, versatility and comfort.

The EX90 has a powerful core system, is always connected and can be improved over time through software updates. These updates are provided by our software engineers, enabled by AI and based on data collected in real time. The EX90 demonstrates our global engineering capabilities and strengthens our leadership position in the technological transition that the automotive industry is currently experiencing.
