For more than a decade, Rafael Amaya has given life to Aurelio Casillas in the successful series The Lord of the heavens of Telemundo, a role that has elevated him in his profession and has made him one of the best-known faces on Spanish-language television.

Now, the actor has decided to end that chapter in his life. “Closing my cycle with ‘The Lord of the Skies’ with this great ninth season fills me with a lot of satisfaction,” Amaya said exclusively to People in spanish. “I am filled with gratitude.”

Also a lot of satisfaction. “[Estoy lleno de] pride in the evolution of Aurelio’s character, as well as the series over the last eleven years,” says the Mexican heartthrob, who not only says goodbye to Casillas, but also says goodbye to the Telemundo network. “I am ready for a new chapter in my career.”

A few weeks ago the green-eyed man gave some clues that he would take a new path. The actor, who recently released a corrido with the singers Tito Double P and FN code which fuses the regional Mexican genre with rap, baffled his social media followers by deleting all his Instagram posts, except for a video in which he appears with his girlfriend Maritza Ramosand which he published at the beginning of the year.

“Reflect, restore, create,” were the words that his girlfriend and manager commented in that message, which generated even more confusion and expectation about the direction of the actor’s career. In the entertainment blog Las Top News it was said that Amaya had not reached any monetary agreement with the network to sign a new contract, to which was added his fatigue from the intense days of recording.

Today, Amaya put an end to the speculation and exclusively confirmed that she has not signed a new contract with the network. “I anticipate with great enthusiasm the professional opportunities that are to come,” said the actor, who wants to give rest to the image of him as the drug trafficker Casillas in order to open other doors.

Since his debut on the Telemundo screen in 2013, Aurelio Casillas’ character fell in love with the audience and gave Amaya a new purpose at the time. Even more so after his abrupt disappearance from networks and television in 2019 after completing a rehabilitation program. “I needed that break, I needed that growth to be able to see life from another perspective,” the heartthrob explained to People in spanish in 2021. “That was very nice, the show of loyalty and also accepting many mistakes that I made, accepting that we are human beings and that it is not wrong to feel bad, that it is not wrong to make mistakes, we are not robots.”
