Why is your new film after ‘Parasites’ being delayed so much?

Parasites has been a before and after in the history of Hollywood or, at least, in the history of its Academy with the Oscar. This Korean production directed by Bong Joon-ho won the Oscar for Best film and it was a phenomenon among the public and critics, bringing the American public closer to new cinematography where it might be necessary to read subtitles. Given such a celebration, it would have been logical to think that Bong had full confidence in Hollywood to make his next film (as he had already had in the past, when developing snowpiercer or Okja), but it hasn’t been like that at all.

Six years have passed since the premiere of Parasites. Bong has not been sitting still meanwhile, testing a series dedicated to Parasites with figures like Adam McKay or Tilda Swinton and, above all, developing a new feature film titled Mickey 17. And therein lies the problem: Bong shot the film in the summer of 2022 with sponsored by Warner Bros., but the major has postponed its release several times. The last date set was for March 29, 2024, and now the final one appears to be January 31, 2025. In all this time, only a few teasers of Mickey 17 have been seen and the same image of Robert Pattinson at all hours .

Furthermore, the fact that Warner has opted for an appointment at the end of January means that it rules out Mickey 17 competing for the Oscars, as it did. Parasites. As it has been revealed, Bong’s intention was to have projected it in the last Cannes Film Festival (which Warner took Furious), but could not agree with the study. Everything led us to the conclusion that the company chaired by David Zaslav He couldn’t quite trust whatever Bong had done with him. Mickey 17and the journalist Daniel Ritchman confirms it.

According to him, Mickey 17 It has been the subject of multiple test screenings, and several course changes based on these and Warner’s ambivalence. There ended up being a tremendous disagreement with the final cut, about which the studio would want to remove Bong (Oscar winner for Best address, remember) the final control. Right now the studio wants to release a version of Mickey 17 further “accessible” for the general public, with Bong’s fierce opposition. Warner does not believe that the original cut can bring people to theaters, and wants to take action.

Looking ahead to its final release in January, it is not clear which version will end up being released. What we do know about Mickey 17 is that it is based on the science fiction novel of the same name by Edward Ashton with an adaptation that he also co-produces Plan B (the seal of Brad Pitt). The film centers on an android “expendable” in the midst of a colonization mission on an icy planet, which is taken over by another android called Mickey 8.

In the cast, in addition to Pattinson as the protagonist, we find Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun and Naomi Ackie. The film cost 150 million dollarsaccentuating Warner’s concern with the material.
