Taking care of your diet and having a balanced diet is something that should be constantly taken into account to prevent overweight and obesity, not only in adults but also in young people and children.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century.

For this reason, Nueva EPS consulted specialist Claudia González, coordinator of the Nutrition Area at Hospital Universitario Mayor Méderi, who provides a series of suggestions for maintaining a healthy diet:

What foods should be present in a healthy diet?

First of all, it is important to remember the need to consume foods from all groups (grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy products and proteins), in sufficient quantities according to the activities we do.

It is also important to maintain a good state of hydration; Although it does not provide any type of energy or nutrients, water is essential for the proper functioning of the human body. This is why it is recommended to consume approximately four to six glasses of water daily, in addition to the liquids contained in other foods.

Now, if you must take lunch boxes to the workplace, school or university, you should not forget to always include fruits in sufficient quantities, dairy products such as cheese, yogurt or kumis. Also include proteins and cereals, preferably whole grains, such as whole grain breads or cookies, which are foods that will allow you to have a sufficiently varied balanced lunch box with the appropriate nutrients.

So, what foods should be discarded in a healthy diet?

Avoid pastry products, such as puff pastries that have a high amount of fat. Processed and ultra-processed products with added sugars should also be avoided.

It must be remembered that this also includes the way the food is prepared, which is why frying, reusing oils and adding sauces should be avoided. These can be replaced with natural marinades, such as lemon, vinegars and spices to flavor foods.
