The first oncology doctors trained outside of Santiago successfully completed their subspecialization studies in Temuco, based on the program launched a few years ago by the Ufro Faculty of Medicine.

These are Paulina Collao Alcaya and Fernanco Godoy Said, who will strengthen the medical team of oncologists at the Dr. Hernán Henríquez Aravena Hospital in Temuco.

“It is something that fills us with pride because it is the completion of a long process that began with the creation of this scholarship that marks an important fact, because they are the first trained in the regions,” stressed the director of the Medical Oncology subspecialty program of the Ufro, Dr. Patricio Yáñez Weber.

At Ufro, the subspecialization program in Medical Oncology began in June 2022 and lasts two years. As a requirement, those who enter must be doctors and specialists in Internal Medicine. Another resident is currently in training and there is already a competition for new applicants.

The dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Wilfried Diener Ojeda, stated that “it is extraordinary that we graduate subspecialists from fields as complex as Oncology, which allows us to say that we continue to grow and differentiate ourselves.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Paula Carrasco, head of the HHHA Adult Oncology Responsibility Center, said she was satisfied with the incorporation of the new specialists since this will improve the hospital’s care capacity. “Now, with two new 44-hour admissions, there will be greater availability to care for the users of the care center,” she said.

The oncologists

“It is a pride to be one of the first graduates from the regions and not from Santiago. On the other hand, to study a scholarship that was done with effort and, from now on, integrate the Oncology team and respond to the large number of patients we have,” expressed Dr. Paulina Collao who studied Medicine and the specialty of Internal Medicine at Ufro.

At the same time, Dr. Fernando Godoy also studied Medicine and Internal Medicine at Ufro, worked in the Intensive Care Unit for six years and entered the Oncology fellowship. “Not everyone knows what an oncologist does and we help people with cancer once they are diagnosed.
