Animal Welfare Center celebrates its first year: more than 6,700 pets cared for

24,407 animals have benefited from the Animal Welfare program promoted by the administration of Mayor Alejandro Char.

A year ago, the Mayor’s Office of Barranquilla launched a safe and appropriate space for animals in vulnerable conditions: the Animal Welfare Center (CBA), on road 11 No. 4 – 413 on the road that leads to the town of Juan Mine, with trained personnel and high quality equipment.

Scooby, a dog that had been attacked with a machete, became the official image of the center. Today, the CBA proudly celebrates its first year of service, during which it has managed to transform the lives of thousands of animals in the city.

Since its opening, more than 6,700 animals have been cared for at the CBA facilities, of which 68% correspond to canines, 32% to felines and 0.1% to equines; most cases due to intoxication, poisoning, different types of tumors, presence of hemoparasites, dystocic births, pyometras, open wounds, myiasis, gastrointestinal and kidney diseases, obstructions, as well as limbs and organs compromised due to being run over, among others.

On the other hand, through the extramural services of the CBA, 12,612 canines and felines were sterilized, 1,851 emergencies were attended to through the Animal Patrol, 268 adoptions, 65 special handling canines registered, 2,852 pets evaluated and dewormed.

This is how, thanks to the joint effort of the Barranquilla Mayor’s Office, the veterinary team, volunteers and the community in general, a total of 24,407 animals have benefited from the Animal Welfare program.

For Mayor Alejandro Char, these success stories are proof of the positive impact that the CBA has had for the care and recovery of animals in vulnerable conditions, given that they not only receive medical service, but adoption is promoted.

For her part, first lady Katia Nule, who visited the CBA on the occasion of its first anniversary, highlighted the importance of providing love and the best care to animals: “We are very happy because this is an issue that concerns all of us. Barranquilla people, people who like animals, children, families, there is a lot we learn from pets, the love they give us, empathy, and there is a lot we have to do for them and we are going to continue working from the Animal Welfare Center.”

It should be remembered that $4,513,288,573 were allocated for the construction work of the CBA, while the operation during this first year of management was 2,900 million pesos. For the extramural services of the CBA, such as daily sterilization sessions, emergency care through the Animal Patrol, welfare sessions, census of special management breeds, adoption and awareness talks on responsible pet ownership, were allocated in the last $6,075,000,000 per year, for a total of $8,975,000,000 allocated to all services of the Animal Welfare program.
