He Córdoba Public Health Laboratory confirmed the presence of the mosquito Aedes albopictus in Montería. This species is capable of transmitting dengue, which has led health authorities to intensify the call for self-care.

According to the same laboratory, the World Health Organization reported in 2023 that dengue cases would increase, and Colombia is already experiencing this situation.

Entomologist Elkin Monterrosa Vergara, from the departmental health department, indicated that it is carried out continuous surveillance of vectorss new ones that enter the department. In May, through larvitraps placed in different neighborhoods of Montería, the presence of the Aedes albopictus. This mosquito had previously been detected in five municipalities in the south of Córdoba, but it is the first time located in Monteria.

Unlike Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus can reproduce both in waters clean as in dirty water. Monterrosa Vergara urged the community to avoid stagnant water to prevent the mosquito proliferation.

The University of Córdoba identified the presence of Aedes albopictus in municipalities such as Ayapel, Buenavista, Planeta Rica, Pueblo Nuevo and Puerto Libertador last year.

The departmental Secretary of Health Development, Carlos Vasco Álvarez, emphasized the importance of self-care and prevention of dengue, recalling that this disease can affect anyone.

Measures to prevent dengue

The Public Health Laboratory recommends the following alternatives for prevent the spread of mosquitoes.

  • Eliminate mosquito breeding sites such as tires, lids and puddles.
  • Keep pools and water tanks covered and wash them every 8 days.
  • Use repellent.
  • Install mosquito nets, especially in rural areas.
  • Drain standing water in vacant lots and keep them free of weeds.

According to the Epidemiological Surveillance System, up to week 23 there have been reports 2,113 cases of dengue in Córdoba, with two deaths confirmed by the National Institute of Health.

Between March and June, the Vector-Borne Diseases and Zoonoses team has carried out promotion and prevention campaigns, reaching more than 81,454 people in 29 municipalities from the Department.
