As doctor and neuroscientist Justin Rhodes explained to ‘CNN’, aerobic exercises, such as running, jumping or swimming, can benefit the brain in two ways: with short and long term effects.

The expert pointed out that in the short term, physical activity can produce ‘acute effects’ that allow the brain to feel much more active. “You have adrenaline in your blood, which is a hormone that wakes up your brain, making your nerve cells more likely to fire, so you can pay better attention and learn more efficiently,” stood out.

The most lasting impacts have to do with the regulation of brain activity. This can be seen in the fact that, when exercising, the hippocampus (the part of the brain that plays a crucial role in learning and memory) becomes even more involved. “This repeated activation of the hippocampus during exercise results in the growth of its cells in that area of the brain; and the growth of the entire structure, which not only boosts memory, but can also help prevent memory from deteriorating.”he indicated.

These statements are in line with what was concluded by a group of researchers from the University of Queensland (Australia). The study, focused on identifying the mechanisms that contribute to exercise preventing cognitive declineshows that physical activity could directly affect the functioning of microglia.

The above is further understood when we consider that these cells are responsible for supporting brain function and are associated with the aging process.
