‘Operation Hope’: where to watch the documentary of the lost children in the Amazon

The documentary “Operation Hope” focuses on the story of four indigenous children who were lost in the Amazon jungle in Colombia. These events occurred on May 1, 2023 in the Guaviare jungle, in which four minors, between one and 13 years old, were lost in the middle of the Amazon, after the small plane they were traveling in crashed.

The plot develops through Lesly, Soleiney, Tien and Cristin who wait for Colombian soldiers with modern technology and indigenous populations with survival skills and spiritual connection with nature, they manage to find them after 40 days lost in the middle of the jungle.

“A place where few humans venture and where it is believed that powerful spirits of the jungle exist,” reads the voice of Colombian singer Gloria “Goyo” Emilse Martínez, narrator of the trailer.

The documentary also manages to convey the difficulty for the searchers to work in a difficult and oppressive environment, finding locations to film safely, but environmentally the same as the area where the plane had crashed, were just some of the obstacles that they sorted out along the way.

The biggest challenge was telling the story of the Mucutuy brothers from their point of view, but without being able to talk to them. Through the story of her grandmother Fátima Valencia, her aunt Yeritza, her uncle Dairo, and several relatives, they were able to accurately and respectfully reconstruct the epic survival story of Lesly and his brothers.

The story of the brothers was collected by the journalist Daniel Coronell, in the book ‘The Children of the Amazon’, in which he explored the mysteries that surrounded the tragedy, in which there were theories that said that the minors had been trapped by a goblin or that an older indigenous person, who after taking yagé (ayahuasca), fought to free them.
