The law of the future arrived in the eighties with one of the great dystopian satires of the decade

There was a time when Paul Verhoeven was practically a safe bet when it came to creating science fiction satires with an undeniable European touch in his treatment of humor and violence. He did it in ‘Robocop‘, he repeated in ‘Total Challenge’ and culminated the trilogy of wonders with ‘Starship Troopers’. The first of them has just arrived, accompanied by all its sequels and remaketo Prime Video, where it can be seen in addition to Filmin.

We know the story very well: in the Detroit of the future, a corporation wants to replace police officers with ruthless robots. The pilot program, let’s say, is Robocop, a robot built from an agent, Murphy, who died in the line of duty. Murphy doesn’t remember anything about his past, but when he does, he will begin to question everything his superiors have done to continue using his body.

With an absolutely brutal sense of humor (reminiscent, in that sense, of ‘Total Challenge’), Verhoeven presented a devastating satire on a future that is very familiar to us: that of the savage privatization of public services and its consequences. The director spices all this up with explosive action sequences, special effects by Rob Bottin (‘The Thing’) that are still as fresh as the first day and a B-movie spirit on steroids that makes ridiculous the solemnity and ambition of any blockbuster. current.

Although decidedly inferior, its sequels are interesting and are also available in streaming. ‘Robocop 2’ has a script by Frank Miller and although it loses some of the hook of the first installment, brims with very interesting ideas about a ruthless and cyberpunk future. ‘Robocop 3’ is the weakest due to its family orientation, but Fred Dekker is in charge of making a fun adventure film aware of its limitations. And if you want more, the 2014 remake, decidedly below Verhoeven’s, but with a good renewed design and with José Padilha (‘City of God’) at the controls.
