Adapted from the comics created by Jeff Lamire published by DC, The deer boy It is a most original series where animal-human hybrids and ordinary people have to live together in a devastated world that has accompanied us throughout three seasons which have always shown us a post-apocalyptic world where death could lurk around every corner but where there were also space for innocence and hope.

Two factors that according to the showrunner of the series, Jim Mickle, have been key throughout the 24 episodes that make it up, where its great protagonist, Christian Convery, who plays the role of Gus, has been a fundamental piece from the beginning and until the end of _The Deer Boy_o. “When there were doubts, we just had to focus closely on his face and everything worked“, he commented.

They didn’t want to repeat the mistakes of ‘Stranger Things’

He did so in an interview with Deadline in which Mickle addressed this and many other issues now that Sweet Tooth: The Deer Boy ha your adventure is over on Netflix, the only platform on which we can see it.

Watch on Netflix

Mickle explained that, as in Stranger Things, time was a crucial factor due to the growth of child actors. “It was always there, yeah. From the beginning when we cast Christian. Netflix stepped in after the first season and said it looked like we had an ending at the end of season three, which made sense to me. We were able to commit to doing seasons two and three in a row, eliminating the waiting period between them. “He made it incredibly difficult, but it was worth it,” she explained.

Thanks in part to this, the end of the series was planned from the beginning, closely following the one in the comics. “The comics have probably four big arcs. It ends in a really beautiful way,” Mickle said. “We brought in new characters and our plots began to have their own weight in a very beautiful way, so we deviate a little of the central elements and towards the middle we deviate even more. It was great to be able reach a similar point but in a very different way.”

A hopeful ending

Regarding public reception, the showrunner noted that the series appealed to a broader audience than the comics. “I think the comics were a lot more melancholic and rare. When I started adapting them in 2016, it was a dark period for the world and for me personally. What really attracted me to the comics was Gus’s hope and innocence, which was almost comical because of the brutality of the world he was in. “That’s what I wanted to emphasize in the series.”

Finally, Mickle reflected on Gus’ journey and how His innocence was a central theme in the final season. “In season three, his life wasn’t in danger, but his innocence was. That was something we really highlighted. His superpower is hope and find the best in humanity,” he concluded.
