The story, briefly mentioned in the appendices of The Lord of the ringshas been expanded for this film, promising to reveal previously unknown details about one of the most powerful characters in the history of Rohan.

Philippa Boyens, producer and co-writer of the scripts for Peter Jackson’s live-action films, spoke about the potential of telling this story in anime format. “When they suggested anime, that’s when my brain really started working,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “Immediately, the idea came to me to tell this story. They had several different ones they were going to propose to me, but I was quite bossy and said, ‘No, I know exactly what you need.”

But the choice of anime style as a medium was not arbitrary. Boyens explained how “I immediately felt like it would work in anime because it’s very character-driven and also contained within its own world. It talks about certain things that work very well with Japanese narrative.” Now, in addition, we can see the first images.

What we expect from ‘The Rohirrim War’

The plot will focus on Helm Iron Handto whom he lends his voice Brian Cox, the patriarch in the series Successionand in his fight against the armies of the dunlending led by the formidable antagonist Wulf, played by Luke Pasqualino. Boyens highlights Wulf’s humanity, making him even more dangerous than typical fantasy villains. “We have an exceptionally great antagonist in this story,” he said. “He’s been one of my favorite antagonists to write in all the movies I’ve worked on.”

Furthermore, the film introduces Hèra, Helm’s daughtera character who does not have a name in Tolkien’s appendices but who plays a crucial role in the conflict. Hèra, played by Gaia Wisethe daughter of actress Emma Thompson, is presented as a complex and fierce young woman, similar to the heroines of Hayao Miyazaki’s films. “Comparing her to Arwen and Éowyn, they are already fully formed women. What I loved about Hèra is that she is fierce, complex and rebellious,” Wise commented.

Director Kenji Kamiyama also shared his enthusiasm for the project, noting the relevance of history in the current context. “This is the story of the most powerful king in the history of Rohan, someone who defeated his enemies with his bare hands,” he said. “We live in a time when, around the world, we are once again facing the reality of war. So what is power? What is the responsibility of those who own it?”

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim promises to be an exciting addition to Tolkien’s universe, combining the rich narrative tradition of Middle-earth with the vibrant visual style of anime. Fans will be able to enjoy this new adventure when the film hits theaters. cinemas on December 13.
