In a new chat with The Metallica Report (via Blabbermouth.net), the frontman of Metallica, James Hetfieldhas been asked if there is any new group that has surprised him in recent months.
The Metallica man responded the following: “As for new music… Let’s see. I’ve been through Sirius radio where someone else is in control, I don’t learn as many new things. I don’t like getting stuck in that rabbit hole: ‘If you like this, you might like that.’ And sometimes it doesn’t work. It’s a computer telling me what I might like. But listening to the radio, I think the last thing that surprised me and made me smile was. Category 7, a group in which well-known people collaborate. She was listening to him and saying, ‘That voice is impressive. And it sounds very familiar to me.’ He was fucking John Bush from Armored Saint, our singer we never had. He says that last bit because Metallica tested out the vocalist before making Hetfield the group’s permanent frontman.
“John Bush is in a group with other very well-known people, Phil Demmel from Machine Head, bassist Jack Gibson from Exodus, other people in this group, a kind of, I don’t know if a supergroup of metalheads, but they all wanted to form a group and start playing. And Brian Slagel from Metal Blade Records signed them. So I heard a song on the radio, and that’s it. And it was really good. And I’m glad John came out on his own and there. done his thing. He was so, so, so tied to Armored Saint and then to Anthrax…. Yeah, it’s exciting.”
