Taylor Sheridan (‘Comanchería, Wind River, Yellowatone…) has become the Cormac McCarthy of the series, a screenwriter who paints the soul of American society like no other and takes refuge in the nation’s founding values. His stories are raw, with characters as extreme as they are realistic and with a psychological violence that is intrinsic to the territory in which they move. On this occasion he relies on actor and screenwriter Hugh Dillon (‘Flashpoint’, ‘The Killing’…) to create a universe rich in nuances.

‘Mayor of Kingstown’ is a series, not a minor, that approaches the prison world from a different perspective. It focuses on a mediator who tries to maintain a fragile balance within a reclusive population of 20,000 individuals who are grouped into various tribes: white supremacists, blacks, Mexicans, Russians… It is true that he uses clichés, but it is also true that they are characters credible ones that move in gray areas.

Jeremy Renner is the main character, an ex-convict with contacts in both the criminal and police worlds and who pulls the strings with the sole objective of maintaining peace both in the prison and on the streets of Kingstown, a fictional city, but clearly inspired by Canadian Kingston.

Prostitution, corruption, robberies, robberies, drug trafficking, murders, extreme police violence… are a regular part of the landscape in which the series moves.. In addition to Renner’s excellent work, the very high level of secondary school makes the series grow, that at times can look titles like ‘The Wire’ or ‘Shield’ in the eye. The antagonist is Aidan Gillen (Milo), the well-known Little finger from ‘Game of Thrones’, although there are other criminals with greater weight and depth in the series, especially the trafficker and leader of the Crips ‘Bunny’ Washington (Tobi Bamtefa).

Is ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ worth watching?

  • Although it is a fictional story, it is treated with a high degree of realism.
  • Great job by Jeremy Renner.
  • Excellent level of the secondary characters.
  • It looks easy, it belongs to the “…one more episode…” class.
