Chatting with Fede Álvarez, director of ‘Alien Romulus’: “This is pure and simple terror with little dialogue”

The expectation for ‘Alien Romulus‘, the new film in the saga of the fearsome xenomorphs, is growing rapidly with each new development less than two months after its release in theaters. So much so, that in MeriStation We have already had the opportunity to see up to 15 minutes of the new film directed by Fede Alvarez in a special screening that took place yesterday in the city of Barcelona. In addition, attendees were able to participate in a interesting colloquium with the Uruguayan director of horror films as celebrated as the remake of ‘Infernal possession‘ either ‘Do not breathe‘, who shared several key aspects of his new work, from the long-awaited return of the franchise to the “pure and simple terror” to his very varied inspirations, including a couple of video games from the saga that according to the director, “we cannot get lost.”

“The best sci-fi horror ideas in four decades compressed into two hours”

For the filmmaker, working on the ‘Alien’ franchise has been a turning point in his career: “One of the best experiences of my life has been working on this film because of what it means. privilege to collaborate with Ridley“, discussing the scripts with him, and for the fact that he gave me the opportunity to do it,” Álvarez said about the director of the first installment of the saga, Ridley Scott, released more than 40 years ago. In this sense, he has clarified that everything revolves around terror, based on the original film: “It was a different way of conceiving terror in space, a crude, sordid film. My attitude as a filmmaker is to try to discover and understand what these things are, why it works… It’s so special.”

“It’s a humbling moment, understanding how these movies really work. Over the years we lose the sensitivity of the child, like when we saw ‘Alien: The Eighth Passenger’. That’s what I try to deal with in ‘Alien Romulus’, the terror, the essence, accepting things, why they work,” continues the director, not without acknowledging that as the saga progressed it became more sophisticated, leaving aside its most terrifying aspect. “Many forget that it is a horror movie. This is pure and simple terror.”, says Álvarez.

Regarding whether ‘Alien Romulus’ bears his stamp as a director, Álvarez avoids this possibility, ensuring that he never intends to bring out his ego; even less so in a film from such a recognized and popular saga, although we will be able to recognize some of his methods as its creator: “Your style is your own limitation. You will find things in common with my other films in terms of style or language. But now. I try to tell as much as possible with the camera, instead of a lot of dialogue. I wanted to let the camera speakthat the script does not have to tell what the camera already tells,” explains the Uruguayan director.

The influences of ‘Alien Romulus’

Regarding the different inspirations that Álvarez has turned to to immerse himself in the ‘Alien’ universe, the director highlights, beyond the films, the comicsthe audiobooks of the previous films, the novels about the ‘Alien’ myth and even the video games of the saga: “I always played the games, Aliens vs Predator 2Yes, AvP 2, that one was incredible, and of course Alien Isolation. Without a doubt, all those brilliant minds over decades, all those elements combined in one film. I hope fans identify winks and details in ‘Alien Romulus’, they are two hours of the best sci-fi horror ideas that were created in four decades, compressed into two hours.”

“I will never contradict the canon”

One of the most important elements for the filmmaker when directing ‘Alien Romulus’ has been respect for the saga and its official canondespite the fact that together with his team they have wanted to innovate in different aspects never seen before, such as the famous birth of the xenomorph that caused such an impact among those attending the special screening in his charge: “There are more new things than classic, but I will never contradict the canonchildbirth, we always see the skin on the ground, but there is also a shell state,” explains the director.

Regarding the adult classification of the film, they have tried to go to the limit so as not to receive the X rating, so fans can breathe easy. So much so, that they have played with elements like Giger did at the time with his designs: “He wanted something like a vagina in the egg but it was too obvious and in the end he put the cross that they were actually two crossed vaginas, and He laughed because no one noticed”, explains the director between laughs. About the tone of the film and its protagonists: “It’s not just survivingyou will have to see the movie to know what really happens, it is the first time we see a group of protagonists so united and with so many elements in common – although we already saw a little of that in ‘Aliens’ and ‘Alien Resurrection’ – who are they? These people, what relationship they have, their past…

Alien Romulus‘ opens in cinemas in Spain on Thursday August 15th.
