The Michael Bay experience at its peak, for better and for worse
The successes of ‘Barbie’ and to a certain extent of ‘Super Mario Bros.: The Movie’ anticipate a future that could be shocking for spectacle cinema with a powerful wave of game adaptations that the only thing they have is a recognizable name. We can expect many films like this last one, but if we are lucky that a filmmaker with a certain charisma is involved we can have more like the first one or like ‘Transformers’.
More than your eyes see
The crazy franchise of alien robots capable of camouflaging themselves as vehicles or some creatures had its own dominance on the billboards even before this potential wave of toy movies began. A success that came from the hand of Michael Bay who injected his personality and quite a few steroids through five films that are now streaming for a limited time through Amazon Prime Video, since June 30 will be your last day on the platform (can also be found on SkyShowtime).
Starting from the first ‘Transformers’, we see that both the Autobot race and the Decepticon race arrive on Earth from the planet Cybertron, where they have fought a fierce battle. Now on our planet their confrontations continue, this time in search of a source of energy with which to return home. The autobots will have the help of a few humans willing to help them.
The details of each movie’s plot don’t matter too much, because it all tends to the same thing: the Autobots finding a new aspect of key mythology to face their next enemy, and a crazy group of humans who have the faces of Shia LaBeouf, Mark Wahlberg or John Turturro (secret MVP of this saga), but above all somewhat deranged behaviors.
With these characters and totally explosive action scenes, the five films end up being the Bayhem experience at its most extreme. In the best moments, like the original or ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’, they offer the most exciting sci-fi madnessvisually powerful and surprisingly clear despite all the moving junk.
At their worst, they are, of course, a quite exhausting and even unbearable experience, which also provides you with information that you did not need, such as how the consent law works in certain states. ‘Revenge of the Fallen’ was clearly weighed down by the time of the writers’ strike, while ‘Age of Extinction’ or ‘The Last Knight’ already had Bay quite burned out on his ideas, leaving the enjoyment to very sparks. punctual. However, they are some fascinating movies and with more personality than the last one that was released in theaters, already distanced from the director.
