The presentation of the film is part of the celebration program until March 30 of the 65th anniversary of the creation of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (Icaic).

The work recalls the revolutionary’s imprint from his participation in the struggles for Cuba’s independence from the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and his role as one of the founders of the State Security organs on the Caribbean island after the revolutionary triumph of 1 January 1959.

Known by his closest collaborators for the color of his beard since he came down from the Sierra Maestra with the rank of commander of the Rebel Army, Piñeiro also carried out important responsibilities that linked him from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba to the liberation movements. in different Latin American countries in the 60’s and 70’s of the last century.

Released in 2023, Chávez’s documentary uses fragments of an interview conducted with Barbarroja in 1997 by the CNN television network, and the one he will conduct with the North American dancer and choreographer Lorna Burdsall, his first wife, with whom he returned to Cuba after studying business administration at Columbia University, in the United States, in the 1950s.

The filmmaker also spoke with the Chilean writer and Marxist theorist Martha Harnecker, his last wife, also deceased, his daughter Camila Piñeiro and other people close to the Cuban political and military leader.

Cuban researcher, film critic, assistant director and screenwriter, Rebeca Chávez (1946- ) graduated in Art History and Journalism and as a film director has stood out in the creation of recognized works of national cinematography such as “Ciudad en Rojo” and “Looking for Chano Pozo” since he joined Icaic in 1974.
