Members of the Department of Criminal Procedure Law witnessed the beginning of an oral trial, with multiple participants.

Students belonging to the Criminal Procedural Law chair of the UV Law degree, taught by Professor Javier Rojas-Mery, made an academic visit to the Oral Criminal Court of Valparaíso.

The objective of the activity was for the group to learn about and observe in person, in the premises of the aforementioned court, the beginning of an oral trial of special complexity, with multiple participants, among whom were former students of the Law School in various roles, as defenders, judge and plaintiff.

In particular, the students participated in the oral trial in the case of the fire of the Court of Letters and Guarantee of Rapa Nui, an event recorded on January 29, 2019 and involving ten defendants for their participation in various crimes, such as arson, attempted homicide, qualified damages, public disorder, injuries to police officers and preventing the passage of emergency vehicles.

In the instance, they witnessed various stages of the process, such as the preliminary questions, the Court’s instructions and the opening statements of the interveners.

Professor Javier Rojas-Mery pointed out in this regard that “without a doubt, observing in practice what is learned in classes allows students to understand in a more attractive way—pedagogically speaking—the regulations and their significance or importance. In this sense, I would like to thank the Court for its provision in allowing the students to enter.”
