These are the resources committed to the seafarers of the neighboring Aysén Region and the natives of Chiloé, to renew the agreement that allows the extraction of sea urchins, red luga and clams.

With this agreement, the entry of 300 divers is allowedalong with forming the Bi-regional Committee in accordance with the provisions of current regulations, composed of 7 representatives of the benthic fishermen of Los Lagos and Aysén.

The Regional Governor of Los Lagos, Patricio Vallespin, emphasized that

“We raised the need for the Regional Government not to transfer the resources to the Regional Government of Aysén because it was not guaranteed that the resources would reach the fishermen of Aysén, who are the ones who reach an agreement with our fishermen. The Regional Government of Los Lagos complied in advance, we have authorized and approved the billion pesos that have been reduced from our budget and that they be delivered to the Undersecretary of Fisheries or to some institution that guarantees that in the region it is done quickly and reaches artisanal fishermen.”

“I have met with the fishermen of our region and the fishermen of Aysén who together can carry out a sustainable extraction of the benthic urchin resources in that area. Therefore, I am very happy and thank the Regional Council for having opened up to this different modality because there will be no agreement through us with the regional government but rather a direct transfer to the institution that is capable of carrying out an initiative that reaches the Aysén fishermen, who are the ones who allow our fishermen, together with them, to carry out the sustainable extraction of this resource that is the livelihood of many families in the region. “More than 4,000 people participate in this productive activity, so it is very good news for our fishermen and also for the fishermen of Aysén”he added.

The agreement has a duration of two years for an amount of one billion pesos per yearthe first payment must be made in June 2024 and the next in the same month of the following year.

The Regional Councilor of Los Lagos and President of the Innovation Commission, Christian Vargasmentioned that

“The issue of contiguous areas was approved again, like last year, there will be one billion pesos of resources so that fishermen in the area of the Los Lagos Region, of Chiloé, Calbuco, can go fishing in the Aysén region, as happens every year. This is a process that we have been doing for several years, it is a way in which we can resolve an issue that has been conflictive, because it is right between the Aysén area.”

The deal also seeks to avoid conflicts or pressure measures since the bi-regional body was created to resolve disagreements. In this way, continuity is given to historical fishing practices in the area, considering that the benthic people of Chiloé have always extracted resources from the southern maritime territories.
