This meeting was held with the communities of Rodadero, Taganga and Parque Tayrona with the objective of knowing the needs of the fishermen.

The District Mayor of Santa Marta, from the Undersecretary of Development, National Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority of Colombia (Aunap), met with the fishermen’s union with the aim of being able to know their needs and establish measures that allow them to develop skills and knowledge regarding fishing.

This meeting had the support of 40 fishermen’s associations where they were able to express to the officials their needs, the abandonment they have had by previous governments and ask that they be supported with labor reconversion because fishing productivity has declined. Given the situation that the fishermen’s union is going through, the Mayor’s Office stated that they will take the appropriate measures regarding this problem.

The fishermen requested training that is related to the use of engines and navigation so that they can function in their daily lives in fishing activities. Given this request, the officials agreed to request these courses so that they can be taught in the city of Santa Marta.

The Agrarian Bank was also supporting the Mayor’s Office officials, where they gave them a small training on how to request loans that allow them to improve their employment situation.

The Undersecretary of Rural Development commented that they will be working with these associations and that they will be making personalized visits to the fishermen to learn about each one’s respective cases.
