Three militarized Carabineros police officers were murdered in Chile, in the context of an alleged ambush by an armed group that occurred in the south of the country. President Gabriel Boric described the event as a ”cowardly attack”and also warned that “There will be no impunity.”

The victims, two first corporals and a first sergeantwere burned inside a vehicle that was on a route, belonging to the town of Cañete, near Concepción, about 500 kilometers from the capital Santiago. The tragic event occurs in the context of a security crisis in the trans-Andean country.

The crime – which coincided with Carabinero Day – occurred when they were allegedly ambushed by an armed group, who shot the victims and later set the vehicle on fire. In any case, and according to preliminary information, it is not known at this time which group was behind the criminal act.

Gabriel Boric spoke out through his X account (formerly Twitter) where he wrote: ”This morning we received the serious and painful news of an attack in the province of Arauco in which three police officers were murdered.

Furthermore, he assured that “after a emergency meeting with the ministers Carolina Tohá, Maya Fernández, the undersecretaries Manuel Monsalve and Ricardo Montero, and the presidential delegate of Biobío, Daniela Dresdner”, they managed to coordinate ”immediate actions to respond to this cowardly attack”.

He confirmed that he will travel in ”the next few hours” with ”various State authorities to the area.” And he added detailing that ”the police, Armed Forces and Government teams are already working at the scene. I assure Chileans that there will be no impunity and that we will find the whereabouts of the perpetrators of this terrible crime.”

Finally, declared a National Mourning for three days throughout Chile, and sent a message to the police: ”Know, Carabineros of Chile, that you are not alone.”

José Antonio Kast, who serves as leader of the Republican Party and was also a far-right presidential candidate, also expressed himself on his X account, but to ask Boric to declare a state of siege after the police crime.

”The president of the Republic, Gabriel Boric must decree a state of siege today. You must call the Armed Forces and the Police Forces today and pursue these murderers to the point of exhaustion, to lock them up, condemn them and apply the full rigor of the Law to them, but that is not enough. The President must today also dismiss his security team: Carolina Tohá, Manuel Monsalve, Mr. [Eduardo] Vergara. “None of them should continue after these terrible events that have affected the Carabineros and our entire country,” said Kast.

”President Boric, the time has come to wake up”he sentenced.
