Álvaro Córdoba, brother of the late Senator Piedad Córdoba, was sentenced this April 26 in the United States for the crime of drug trafficking to 14 years in prison in that country, where he was recently extradited.

On April 19, the US Government filed its proposed sentence against Álvaro Fredy Córdoba Ruiz before the Federal Court for the Southern District of New York. They asked the judge to impose a sentence of no less than 17 and a half years in prison, equivalent to 210 months; They even expected him to be 21 years old.

Thus, Álvaro Córdoba pleaded guilty at the time to the charge of conspiracy to import and distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine.

It should be noted that the Colombian’s defense tried to lower the final sentence, but was unsuccessful; They intended it to be a 5-year sentence.

The US evidence in the case against Álvaro Córdoba

The document from the Prosecutor’s Office of the Southern District of New York reveals the evidentiary material that the United States justice system has against Álvaro Córdoba.

They collected more than 300 calls and also meetings that lasted more than a year and refer not only to Córdoba but to the co-defendants: Libia Amanda Palacio and Alberto Alonso Jaramillo, among others.

They highlight dialogues and meetings with a group of people that Palacio introduced to Córdoba, serving as an intermediary, and who had said they were Mexican drug traffickers, but were really DEA officials.

“Palacio told the CSES that she was available as an intermediary for large cocaine transactions with extensive connections with, among others, the FARC, the Cartel de los Soles and Colombian political leaders,” the document reads.
