Martiniano Leguizamón is born

We transcribe fragments of a note that appeared in 1958, in the magazine Blanco y Negro, under the title “The centenary of Martiniano Leguizamón”, written by Bernardo Verbitsky.

“The centenary of Martiniano Leguizamón, born on April 28, 1858, has been remembered with articles and speeches at successive public events – the last one was held at SADE in the first days of August. His memory has been honored but What is impossible is finding his books. They have been out of print for many years and except for two, Memories of the Earth and Montaraz, republished not long ago, the other titles that make up his complete works are today the obsession of those who try to gather material from Argentine literature, which has disappeared from circulation. His books have thus become rare pieces more accessible to collectors than to first readers. However, Leguizamón is not a fossil of our literature, and much of his work maintains his vitality.

This was demonstrated about two decades ago when Calandria was performed again at the Teatro Cervantes. Exhumed some forty years after its premiere, which was in 1896, far from being a historical curiosity, it was a public success. It was interesting that posthumous triumph of an author whose first work was from 1877 (…)

The novel Montaraz is also a work that is still alive. It was published in 1900, a date that seems incredibly remote to us precisely because of the lack of tradition. Reading Montaraz brings the surprise of its modernity. Leguizamón evokes distant events in the history of his Entre Ríos and does so with the claw of a current novelist. The structure and style are from today. More than describing or recounting, it makes the events live through characters who in the rhythm of their actions bring us the echo of a heroic time, Argentine and American, which is thus saved in artistic testimony, and not merely documentary. They project a statue in tribute to Urquiza

The Legislature passed a law declaring that General Urquiza, “First Constitutional Governor of the Province”, has deserved good from the Homeland “granting him a vote of grace and providing that from now on all local authorities would give him the treatment of excellence”, he ordered the erection in the Plaza Nueva of Uruguay, which from now on would be called Urquiza, a column on which his statue would be placed and which would have the following phrase engraved at the foot: ‘Diacite a me virtutem bellique laborem’, and, in the plinth, the text of the law that was promulgated by Governor Domínguez.

This initiative, to raise a statue to Urquiza while he was alive, deserved the energetic opposition of deputy Dr. Evaristo Carriego who gave an interesting speech. “We,” he said, “live in the same era and in the same country as the man for whom the project under discussion has been presented. This may lead to doubts about our impartiality. This may give reason to suppose that fear or flattery have induced us to decree these honors!

Without alleging or stating grounds of any kind, this Law was repealed by another law passed on January 18, 1875.
