On a pleasant morning yesterday the 203 years of the Battle of León were remembered. And in that town in the jurisdiction of Yala, tribute was paid to those who fought and prevented the Spanish advance in our territory, thus commemorating the Big Day of Jujuy. With a protocol act and a civic, military and gaucho parade, one of the most relevant historical events in the province was remembered.

The central ceremony took place at the monolith located on the side of National Route 9. It was headed by Governor Carlos Sadir; the mayor of the Municipality of Yala, Santiago Tizón; among other provincial and municipal authorities, as well as legislators and representatives of traditionalist entities.

In that sense, Mayor Tizón spoke with this morning newspaper about one of the “most important dates and one of the most important battles that has been fought in provincial territory,” and highlighted that this combat was “planned, organized and executed exclusively for jujeños”.

He also pointed out the effects of this epic episode of the War of Independence. “On the one hand, it was to consolidate the national sovereignty that we can enjoy today, and the other, to sow that seed that after 13 years would end in the Political Autonomy of Jujuy,” he noted.

Then he closed by saying that we as Jujeños must “value our history”, because “no one is going to do it. That is why we must transmit it to future generations, we must keep patriotism alive and continue honoring our heroes,” he remarked.

The Battle of León took place within the framework of the war for national independence on the banks of the Yala River, on April 27, 1821, where the royalist forces commanded by Colonel Juan Guillermo Marquiegui were defeated by the Jujuy gauchos under the command of Colonel José Ignacio Gorriti.

Gaucho women and men, without having military training, made themselves available to fight for the nation that was emerging. This date was the spontaneous result of the will of a people, who were abandoned by the central power and resolved this clash on their own. That day, in a new attack, a camp was made in the Yala area where the gauchos awaited the invaders and attacked them in León, in a combat that lasted more than a day.
