Five people were injured in a chase accident involving a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office patrol car in San Jose on Sunday afternoon, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The two-car crash occurred around 12:35 p.m. in the area of Commodore Drive and King Road, the San Jose Police Department said. According to the Sheriff’s Department, a deputy was chasing a car when he crashed into an unrelated pickup truck.
The four people traveling in the van were taken to the hospital with “non-life-threatening” injuries, authorities said, adding that the officer also suffered minor injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office said the chase began near Berryessa Road and North Capitol Avenue when deputies attempted to stop a speeding driver, unrelated to the pickup truck, who then drove away.
After the accident, other officers continued chasing the driver until immobilizing the car with a spiked strip. Officers then detained the man when he tried to flee on foot.
The driver has since been arrested on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, evading a peace officer, possession of stolen property and delaying and obstructing arrest.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s office at 408-808-6600.
