The recent alliances between the University of Magdalena and the Mayor’s Office of Santa Marta are on the right track. This time the rector Pablo Vera Salazar and the secretary of Security and Coexistence, Colonel (r) Gustavo Berdugo Garavito took the first steps on the land where an Immediate Attention Command – CAI could be built, which after handing over the properties would remain outside the University, that is, in the vicinity of the university and community corridor that surrounds the higher education institution.
It is an undeniable fact that hundreds of students, professors, employees, housewives, parents, and residents of the neighborhoods that border the University have been victims of crime. Human lives have even been lost due to the criminal actions of the assailants. And all this due to the absence of physical strategies and tools that counteract this delicate situation, which mainly points to the university community as the most affected.
AGREEMENTS
This is how the commitments made between the District and the Alma Mater are being fulfilled little by little, materializing a desire of the university community that for several years has asked for different ways to strengthen safe environments.
During the visit, the rector Vera and the Secretary of Security toured the space that, if viable, this initiative would give this House of Higher Studies free of charge for the construction of this CAI that would benefit more neighborhoods and communities in the city.
After the tour, Dr. Pablo Vera explained that this Institution has maintained a harmonious and constructive relationship for several years with the National Police, which has opened its doors to its members so that they can be professionals and receive training while providing their services. .
“For us, a CAI in the new vision that the President has of these spaces is for articulation with the community, for working with young people, but above all for creating safe environments given the influence that the University has in surrounding areas” , indicated the top campus manager.
In turn, Colonel (r) Gustavo Berdugo Garavito, Secretary of Security and Coexistence of Santa Marta, stated that they are analyzing to continue developing the security strategy that has to do with infrastructure, growth and coverage for the entire community of the sectors. surrounding areas and the university.
Among the Immediate Attention Commands that are going to be created in Santa Marta, it is expected that the one that will be near the University of Magdalena will be the first that can materialize this year with the will of both institutions.
After this visit, it is intended to present this initiative at the national level, with complete conviction that it will be a pilot and pioneering proposal for the articulation of efforts between the Public Force, the University and the State, all for community security and its surroundings. .
