The underworld gives no respite in Bucaramanga. Around 10:30 pm on Saturday, April 27, two ‘motothieves’ broke into a commercial establishment on Carrera 34 and Calle 17, in the center of Bucaramanga to attack the site’s administrator.

Witnesses indicated that the two assailants entered with firearms, and in the midst of the struggle, they injured two people.

Uniformed members of the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Police began a chase that sparked an exchange of gunfire. According to the authorities’ report, the criminals would have thrown away the firearm with which they committed the crime in the middle of the escape. So far, there have been no arrests for this incident.

Violent thefts by ‘motothieves’ in the last week

In the last week, thefts committed by ‘motothieves’ have worsened in Bucaramanga. In less than five days, two violent gold chain robberies were recorded in the city. In fact, In one of these events, the community took justice into its own hands and burned the thief’s motorcycle.

This event occurred on Saturday, April 27, at midday, in the Provenza neighborhood. This time, neighbors and onlookers were able to recover the stolen object.

A taxi owner was not so lucky. Last Thursday, April 25, a thief shaved the chain from his neck and intimidated him with a knife so that he would not resist. The victim reported that he was unable to recover his accessory and was unable to locate the license plate of the motorcycle to file the relevant complaint.

What are the authorities doing?

One of the measures announced by the mayor of Bucaramanga, Jaime Andrés Beltrán, to confront constant thefts is the implementation of his ‘Candado Plan’.

The local leader indicated that priority will be given to operations and surveillance by areas against the so-called ‘motothieves’ who have plagued the Bumangueses. In this regard, Mayor Beltrán pointed out that three areas were defined that will have strategic plans by the Ministry of the Interior.

“We are going to be talking about strategic actions by sectors to mitigate the increase in insecurity by criminals who use motorcycles,” said Mayor Beltrán, who asked for the collaboration of citizens to carry out this type of actions.

Although he did not mention the neighborhoods or sectors in which this measure would be applied, Mayor Beltrán pointed out that the areas most affected by crime will have quadrant intervention.
