Members of the board of directors of the Arica Port Company (EPA) and local authorities celebrate obtaining the 40 Hours Seal, becoming a milestone for the region of Arica and Parinacota. The measure has improved the productivity and commitment of employees, while progress is made in the gradual implementation of the 40 Hour Law.
The general manager of EPA, Jorge Cáceres, and the worker representative on the board, Romané Leiva, received the certification with enthusiasm. Both agreed that the reduction in working hours has improved the quality of life of employees and has strengthened the work environment in the company.
The story of this achievement dates back to January 2023, when the EPA board made the decision to implement the 40 Hour Law with its workers. Mario Moya Montenegro, president of the company, highlighted that since April 2023 the reduction of the working day from 45 to 40 hours was carried out. Montenegro highlighted that this measure is part of the company’s efforts to improve the training of workers and their quality of life.
Barbara Ringler, one of the EPA workers, shared her positive experience with reducing work hours. Ringler mentioned that thanks to this measure she can spend more time with her children and dedicate herself to activities that she is passionate about, such as knitting.
The Secretary of Labor and Social Security, Jennifer Lazo, expressed her pride in this milestone and highlighted the positive impact it has had on the lives of workers. Lazo emphasized the importance of dialogue between workers and employers to improve quality of life without affecting productivity.
Regarding the scope of the 40 Hour Law, a gradual reduction in the working day is established. This year, the working day is reduced to 44 hours on a mandatory basis, and will then be reduced to 42 hours in April 2026.
Finally, in 2028 the 40-hour weekly regime will be reached. Companies have the option to implement the 40 hours voluntarily now, without waiting for gradualness.
