(ADN).- Legislators Patricia Mc Kidd, Cesar Dominguez and Santiago Ibarrolaza presented a project to incorporate the teaching of the English Language in the initial level of public education in Río Negro. The initiative plans to modify two articles of the Organic Law of Education, incorporating foreign languages as a fundamental part of the learning mission at both the initial and primary levels.

“I am a retired teacher and taught English for many years of my life. It is not simply learning a new language, it is opening the door to the world, it is generating more job opportunities. And the time to start learning it is at the initial level, when it is easier,” said Mc Kidd.

The legislator indicated: “we have to work on 3, 4 and 5 year old children, teaching in a playful way and with trained professionals. If English appears there, it is much easier to continue learning later.”

According to a report from the Argentine Catholic University, which measures, among other things, access to Education, 90% of private educational proposals nationwide have English in the curriculum from the first years of primary level. On the other hand, in public schools this percentage drops to less than 30%.

“It’s very simple, anyone who can afford English has it, goes to an institute or is offered it at a private school. In public schools and kindergartens it is not an option for the first years. And that only creates more disadvantage, more people who see private education as a better option. And not to mention the social inequality that this generates,” Mc Kidd stressed.

And he concluded: “Our project seeks to begin incorporating English in the gardens and to work in a coordinated manner with children up to 3rd grade. Our role is to educate and give them opportunities. I have no doubt that learning English is super important in that sense.”

The project has already been submitted to the Rio Negro Legislature and will depend on the will of those responsible for the commissions so that it can be worked on for its approval and implementation.
