They recorded a pair of condors taking care of their 4-month-old chick in Tupungato

This is one of the videos obtained:

In addition to this birth, In the last summer season another chick was sighted in Villavicencio. Andean condor chicks (Vultur gryphus) They live with parents until they are 2 years old and at 6 months they can fly. They can live up to 75 years. They begin to reproduce at 11 years old and can procreate every 2 years, since they dedicate all their time to taking care of a chick that will only be able to become independent after that “adult” age.

“Working within the guidelines established by the National Andean Condor Conservation Program-Bioandina Foundation leads us to the most accurate procedures in terms of conservation. The births recorded this summer in the Tupungato Provincial Park and in the Villavicencio Natural Reserve, and the confirmation of good evolution are an excellent indicator for the environment of Mendoza,” stated the director of Biodiversity and Ecopark, Ignacio Haudet.

The Directorate of Renewable Natural Resources and the SOS Acción Salvaje Foundation monitor the Andean condor born in Tupungato.

The Andean condor is a fundamental species for the biodiversity of Mendoza –declared a Natural Monument in the province–, since It is a scavenger and essential for cleaning dead and decaying animals.. It is considered vulnerable, so these births in the Tupungato Provincial Park and the Villavicencio Natural Reserve are excellent news.

How Mendoza approaches protection of the andean condor

These findings of Andean condor chicks are of utmost importance, considering the pressure that the population of this species is going through in the region. The problem originates when Some livestock producers use toxic baits by poisoning dead animals or making meat baits to eliminate other larger predators.such as pumas and foxes that attack their breeding animals.

This methodology becomes a threat to other scavenger species, such as the condor, which descends to eat these dead animals that have already been poisoned. In 2018, the death of 34 Andean condors in Los Molles, Malargüe, due to toxic baits, was an environmental tragedy.

In Mendoza, protected natural areas operate as sanctuaries for the conservation of this threatened species. The Simultaneous Andean Condor Census has been implemented for four years, which is the result of coordinated and sustained inter-institutional work. Both the Andean condor and all the wildlife of Mendoza are protected by the National Wildlife Law 22421, the Provincial Law of accession 4602, its amendment to Law 7308 and the Regulatory Decree 1890/05.

To collaborate in its conservation, you must respect its habitat, not use toxic substances that can later be consumed by animals and be attentive. From the Province, the population is urged to provide information on injured wildlife and illegal hunting or possession.. There is a complaints portal on the Ministry of Energy and Environment website and if it is an emergency, you can call 911 to notify the relevant agencies.

The capture, illegal possession and commercialization of fauna is punishable by legislation, as well as the destruction of their habitats, nests, eggs and young. The alleged offender is at the disposal of Justice and may be punished with sentences of up to prison. The fines for infractions regarding condors – depending on the seriousness of the fact – reach maximum values of $4,478,020 per affected specimen.
