Chile’s unemployment rate experienced an increase of two tenths in the first quarter compared to the fourth quarter of 2023, going from 8.5% to 8.7%, as disclosed this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics of Chile (INE). .

This figure is explained by the increase in the labor force (3.2%), less than that presented by employed people (3.4%). Compared to the first quarter of 2023, the figure had a decrease of 0.1 percentage points.

For their part, unemployed people increased 1.7%, affected by those looking for work for the first time (13.0%) and those who were unemployed (0.5%).

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the participation and occupancy rates stood at 62.4% and 57.0%, growing 1.4 percentage points and 1.3 percentage points, respectively.

For women, the unemployment rate stood at 9.5%, which represents an increase of seven tenths compared to the end of 2023. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate was 8% among men, two tenths less than in the fourth quarter of the previous year.

The informal employment rate stood at 28.1%, with an increase of 0.6 percentage points since December 2023. Informal employed people increased 5.8%, affected by both women (7.8%) and men. men (4.1%). According to economic sector, mainly due to commerce (13.3%) and households as employers (22.5%).
