In an effort to merge art and sustainability, the city of San José has launched a program that seeks to transform the cultural scene while moving towards carbon neutrality by 2030.

The San José Climate Art program brought together local artists, creative producers, and cultural leaders to play a critical role in this ambitious project.

Designed as an innovative pilot and the first in a series of planned phases, the program’s main objective is to develop an action plan to reduce the carbon footprint of the cultural sector.

Through collaboration with the city’s artists and cultural spaces, it is hoped to establish a model of sustainability within the arts.

“Some museums are already applying things that are going to help the environment,” he indicated.

Kaory Santillan, artist.

Since October 2023, the program has been underway, recruiting a select group of local artists and cultural spaces.

Santillan and Ruby Morales, two of the participants, will join intensive workshops designed to understand, modify and reduce the environmental impact of their artistic practices.

“We all have the power to be creative,” said Santillan.

They stated that art has the power to inspire and motivate people to act.

“The most important thing is to have spaces to have those talks,” said Santillan.

The push toward carbon neutrality in San José began with the passage of the Climate Smart San José program in 2018, since then the city has committed to an ambitious goal: achieving complete carbon neutrality by 2030.
