The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) warned this Tuesday that in the last 16 hours there has been an increase in “the recurrence of seismic events” at the Puracé volcano, in the department of Cauca.
“During the last 16 hours there has been an increase in the recurrence of seismic events associated with rock fracturing and the movement of fluids inside the volcano. These earthquakes, although they are low energy, have been located beneath the Puracé volcano building at depths of between 0 and 5 kilometers.“, detailed the SGC in a statement.
That organization specified that for several months the volcano has been experiencing changes in its activity, but noted that for now the alert status remains at “yellow“.
This means that it is a “active volcano with changes in the behavior of the base level of the monitored parameters and other manifestationss”.
“In a yellow alert state, the volcano may present a slight or moderate increase in activity above the base level of behavior, according to the monitored parameters.“added the information.
For the SGC this type of activity is common, but it is not ruled out that the volcano could “evolve to a state of greater excitement, so a change in alertness is not ruled out”.

The Puracé volcano is located 27 kilometers from Popayán, the departmental capital of Cauca, and mainly indigenous and peasant communities live in its area of influence.
It is also one of the 15 volcanoes that make up the Los Coconucos Volcanic Chain and “It is characterized by being a stratovolcano (a type of conical, high-altitude volcano, composed of multiple strata or layers of lava) one of the most active in the country.“, according to the SGC.
