It won’t be news for CNN or El País, but Artemisa, once again, overflows its Mausoleum and floods its avenues with Cubans of all ages… celebrating International Workers’ Day. The major media are not interested in telling that there are millions of revolutionaries, but the truth is in the streets.
Those who came out eager to arrive at our party with their backs loaded with work, those who received the first of May with the intertwined voice of songs and those who ordered the barking of mortars and machine guns to be silenced.
University student Darién Alejandro Hernández Alfonso pointed out an enormous contrast: the guarantees that Cuba celebrates here are still demands of workers in the rest of the world.
“May Day motivates us to participate, to contribute to the Revolution from our role as young students. Although we are not workers yet, we want to demonstrate from early on, whether in the FEEM, the FEU or the UJC, the commitment to the Cuban revolutionary process.
“We have been involved in every mass event, even in the Anti-Imperialist Tribune, with notable prominence both today and in different moments of denunciation of the genocide in Palestine, and we will always be present,” he stressed.
They sing to May Day with a firm throat, with the flags spread in the wind, with their chests suspended, like flames, high above.
