The 5P-syndrome

It is also known as ‘cat’s meow’ because the crying of babies who suffer from it is usually similar to that of a feline. Dr. Lejeune discovered it in 1963 and consists of the loss of genetic material from the short arm on chromosome pair 5. It leads to microcephaly, growth retardation, intellectual disability and difficulty communicating.

In Spain there are about 900 people affected and one in every 500,000 births can suffer from it. The reasons are fortuitous in 80 to 85% of cases and hereditary in 15 to 20%.
