On February 27, 2015astronauts took a beautiful photograph from the International Space Station in which you can see the imposing Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia.
The top of this mountain range, known as Christopher Columbus, reaches a height of approximately 5,700 meters above sea level and has a small but permanent snow cover, despite being only 10 degrees north of the equator.
Due to the high altitude of the peaks, trees cannot grow in this area, so the alpine landscape is dominated by gray and brown tones, where only grass and small shrubs can survive the extreme cold. On the other hand, the lower slopes are covered in lush green due to the presence of forests.
Also in the image The presence of smoke from a forest fire in a valley can be seen, which contrasts with the natural scenery.
It is interesting to note that along the gray zone of the summits signs of glacial erosion are evident, which indicates that in the past there was a large ice sheet that was hundreds of times larger than the one captured in 2015.
In addition to its high peaks, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, which is part of the Tayrona National Natural Park, It has become a tourist attraction due to the multiple changes in climate, landscape, vegetation and fauna that visitors experience when ascending the mountains.
The photograph was captured using a Nikon D4 digital camera with a 290 millimeter lens and the image was cropped and edited to improve contrast and eliminate lens imperfections.
Without a doubt, it is a photograph that reveals the incredible panorama of the majestic summit of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, a natural treasure that deserves to be preserved and admired.
