Since April 29, a sudden increase in the volcano’s seismic activity has been observed, both in the number of events and the energy released. This includes both earthquakes associated with rock fracturing and those related to the activity of fluids inside the volcano.

Based on this information, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) has announced that the Puracé volcano, located in the department of Cauca, has gone from the yellow alert level to the orange level.

What does orange level mean?

The Geological Service explained that during the orange alert state, temporary fluctuations in the volcano’s activity may occur. However, this does not indicate a return to stability.

In the orange alert state, the volcano may present moderate to high increases in seismicity, which may be associated with fluid dynamics or rock fractures inside the volcanic building, considerable deformation of the surface, important changes in the degassing levels.

To return to a minor alert state (Yellow) a reasonable time is required in which all the monitored parameters are evaluated and trends that may indicate greater stability are determined.

recommendations

“It is recommended that the community in general not approach the crater area, since with the current level of activity of the Puracé volcano there is a great risk of being affected by gases or ash emissions that may occur suddenly,” indicates the SGC. .

The Puracé volcano, located in the department of Cauca, exerts its influence on several populations, including indigenous and peasant communities that mostly reside in areas near the volcano.
