In the last hours The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) issued a statement in which it indicated that it raised the alert status to orange due to the risk of eruption of the Puracé volcano, located in the department of Cauca.

“According to the volcanic monitoring records that the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) carries out constantly, In recent weeks, the Puracé volcano has shown a significant increase in earthquakes associated with rock fracturing and the movement of fluids inside the volcano. located at depths between 0 and 4 kilometers in relation to the surface,” Ungrd detailed in its press release.

Likewise, he gave a piece of peace. “However, with the current level of activity of Puracé, the country must be prepared and take the necessary preventive actions to avoid a disaster in the event of a significant eruption,” said John Makario Londoño.

What does it mean that there is an orange alert for a volcano?

In its statement, the Ungrd explained that in the state of alert that was issued, phenomena such as earthquakes, ash emissions, lahars (mud flows), morphological changes, noises and smells of volcanic gases could be recorded.

For this reason, it is key that the communities that live near the volcano are aware of any developments.

Likewise, the orange alert implies that authorities must implement preparation and prevention actions. “It is important to carry out efficient communication processes in the municipalities to avoid confusion or panic in the community. Likewise, it is necessary to understand what is reported by the SGC regarding the evolution of volcanic activity as a dynamic process, so it is essential to remain attentive to the official information issued by the SGC, local authorities and the UNGRD in order to have information accurate for decision-making,” indicated the Ungrd.
