BUENOS AIRES (AP) — The Argentine government reacted sharply on Friday against the president of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, who was confronted with the alleged corruption scandal in which his wife is mentioned, after a senior Spanish official accused Javier Milei of “ingesting substances”.

After repudiating in a statement the “slander and insults” formulated by the Spanish Minister of Transportation, Óscar Puente, the Argentine Presidency office indicated that “Pedro Sánchez’s government has more important problems to deal with.”

Argentina’s response, released late Friday from Buenos Aires, followed comments by Puente against President Milei during an event organized by the Spanish ruling party, the Spanish Socialist Workers Party.

“There are very bad people who, being themselves, reached the top. Milei, for example,” commented Puente. “I have seen Milei on TV, when she came out I don’t know in what state, prior to ingesting or after ingesting what substance… I said ‘it is impossible for her to win the elections.’ Today she dug her own grave.’ Well no,” the official said.

As a result of this statement, the Argentine government pointed out in its reaction note to the controversy that has arisen in recent weeks about Sánchez’s executive, who canceled his public agenda last week to consider whether or not he would resign from office in the face of the accusations against him. familiar surroundings.

“Like the accusations of corruption that fall on his wife, an issue that even led him to evaluate his resignation,” the protest text recalled. “For the good of the Kingdom of Spain, we hope that justice acts quickly to clarify such a corruption scandal that directly affects the stability of your Nation and, consequently, relations with our country,” he said.

Sánchez, a socialist who has governed Spain since 2018, had left open the possibility of resigning after a court began a preliminary investigation against his wife Begoña Gómez for allegedly using her position to influence business agreements.

After taking a few days, the president finally confirmed this Monday that he will continue in office.

In addition to referring to the scandal, the Argentine government pointed out that Sánchez “has also endangered the unity of the Kingdom, making agreements with separatists and leading to the dissolution of Spain; He has put Spanish women at risk by allowing the illegal immigration of those who threaten their physical integrity; and has endangered the middle class with its socialist policies that only bring poverty and death.”

Milei, an ultra-liberal who considers himself the ideological opposite of what he defines as “impoverishing socialism,” has focused his foreign policy on the United States and Israel, leaving close ties with Spain in the background.

“We Argentines chose to change the model that brought us misery and decadence. The same model that the Spanish Socialist Workers Party applies in its country,” highlighted the statement from the Argentine presidency. “We hope that the Spanish people will soon choose to live in freedom again.”
