The president of Chili, Gabriel Boricreiterated that The US must lift the embargo against Havanabut also called to “move towards democratization within the same country”.

In a meeting in the Chilean capital with the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, the president stated that in Cuba “today people are going hungry and where it is necessary once and for all to combat the unilateral blockade, in addition to moving towards democratization within the same country. The unilateral blockade, by the way, by the United States,” he clarified, quoted by the Chilean newspaper The nation.

“Declaring that Cuba is a country that promotes terrorism is not only false, but it violates us,” he added, “which is why we urge the United States to follow the line that Barack Obama’s government had, when it removed it from that infamous list, which has been repeated for three years now and which does so much damage, not to the Government, but to the Cuban people, who do not deserve it.”

Boric and Guterres met on Thursday at the presidential palace of La Moneda to address different matters of the international contingency, human rights, and in particular the delicate political and social situation that countries like Haiti and Cuba are experiencing.

Regarding Haiti, the president expressed that “it is today in a tremendous, tremendously critical situation in many sectors dominated by criminal gangs, where we cannot look the other way in the face of this crisis.”

The head of state also analyzed with Guterres the armed conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the war in Ukraine, which he noted is “the product of an illegal invasion by Russia.”

Yes ok Boric maintains a harsh speech about the regimes of Venezuela and Nicaragua, but not about that of Cubais the first time as president that he refers to the democratization of the Island.

Since the president governs in a coalition with the Communist Party (PC) of Chilea close ally of Havana, this group called on Friday the Minister of the General Secretariat of Government, Camila Vallejo, to delve into these statements.

“President Gabriel Boric has insisted on something that he said even before taking office as president and it has always been part of his call, it is not something new, it is not something unknown to any ruling party, and it has been that conviction and that commitment to democracies, to human rights and to integration, even from countries. Being able to maintain that line and that consequence, therefore, if it wasn’t a problem before, it wouldn’t have to be. This is the position of the Government,” said Vallejo, a PC activist.

And he added: “We have always maintained, even in those countries where we believe that it is important to strengthen democracyprobably more in some than in others, that it is also important to protect the people of those nations against those unilateral measures that are exercised against them.

“We have said it in front of Cuba regarding the blockade, not only us, but also 12 other countries that have signed, subscribed, and supported the lifting of the blockade and economic sanctions. We also did it with Venezuelaand just as we have called to lift this type of unilateral sanctions, We have also said and without a doubt, that it is important to condemn human rights violations and always reaffirm the commitment to their respect,” she added, quoted by Emol.

In reaction, the communist deputy Boris Barreraalthough he said he agreed with the condemnation of the embargo, he noted that “When the President talks about democratization, I don’t know what he means.”

“I don’t know if it is their political system. If so, I don’t know what the standard is for that, because each country has the political system that it wants and that it imposes on itself. For example, in the United States the president is not elected by direct vote, as we do here in Chile, and we could also criticize it,” he said.

“Now, if it refers to the political system in Cuba, well, the Cubans have given themselves in a democratic and sovereign way the political system they have and that has helped them maintain or resist this criminal blockade that the United States has against them for 60 years. What’s more, a few years ago they democratically voted for an important modification to their Constitution, so I don’t know what it refers to,” he said.

This same week, the president of the Chilean Communist PartyLautaro Carmona, and his general secretary, Bárbara Figueroa, They were in Havana to strengthen ties with the Cuban regime.
