May 4: Fans around the world celebrate Star Wars Day

On May 4, Star Wars fans and sympathizers celebrate Star Wars Day, a date to honor the characters, history and background of the saga created by George Lucas.

Why is Star Wars Day celebrated on May 4?

Star Wars Day was created by fans of the saga and subsequently spread on social networks until it became known and celebrated worldwide.

The origin of the date is very curious. On May 4, 1979, when the world was ecstatic after the premiere of the first Star Wars film, the British newspaper London Evening News published an article in which members of the Conservative Party of the United Kingdom congratulated Margaret Thatcher for her newly acquired position as prime minister of the country, including this phrase “May the Force be with you”, translated as “may the force be with you”. This was used by fans as an impetus to create Star Wars Day.

May the Force be with you is a phrase used by characters in the fictional universe of Star Wars, created by George Lucas. It was a phrase to wish luck, generally when individuals parted ways, or one of them was preparing to face an imminent challenge.

Another major milestone came in 2011, when the Toronto Underground Cinema hosted a film festival on this day. Since then, many companies have taken advantage of the occasion to offer special offers and discounts on their Star Wars products.

Star Wars, in history

Few stories maintain the public’s interest more than 40 years since the premiere of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), the first in the saga.

This indicates the strength of this story, which has become a mass phenomenon and a cultural myth over the years. A story that talks about the fight between good and evil, represented in the Jedi and the Sith.

The fight between The Republic and the Empire shows us throughout all the films in the saga a series of scenarios that recreate a universe of races, robots and characters, each one more strange. In addition to showing us planets and universes typical of the wildest imagination.

But the most important thing about the saga is the teaching of values embodied in different characters who enjoy wisdom such as Master Yoda and other Yedi masters.

As all lovers of the saga will know, the original trilogy was developed in the 70s and 80s, being the most valued films.

More than a decade later, the so-called “prequel” trilogy emerged as they tell the story before the original trilogy.
