Tumaco – Nariño

The AWÁ indigenous communities in Nariño, affiliated with the Organization of AWÁ Indigenous Reservations of the Pacific (ORIPAP), announced that they would carry out new blockades as a measure of protest against non-compliance by the National Government.

What are the indigenous communities in Nariño asking for?

This warning comes after last year these communities carried out an indigenous minga that caused blockades on the road to Tumaco for ten days, in which the Government promised to legally recognize the organization. However, to date, this commitment and other pending commitments have not been fulfilled.

“The agreements agreed upon in the minga were the resolution of the ORIPAP organization, the disengagement of the UNIPA reservations, the uploading of the censuses, the constitution of some reservations, among others that have not been fulfilled.” Indicated William García, representative of ORIPAP

According to indigenous community leaders, the deadline for the Government to respond to their demands expires on May 10. If they do not receive a satisfactory response, they announced that they will carry out blockades again in order to demand compliance with the commitments by the State.
